Reptile Thermostat

Reptile Thermostats and their Benefits

Protecting your pet reptile is necessary, especially if you want your pet to have a happy, healthy life. One way to ensure you are providing the proper environment for your reptile is to use a reptile thermostat. Reptile thermostats are set up to regulate the temperature inside the vivarium.

Like any thermostat you may have come into contact with the reptile thermostats will allow you to set a specific temperature inside the cage. However, unlike your normal house thermostat reptile thermostats can have more controls. To explain this further it is necessary to examine the types of reptile thermostats and then discuss their benefits.

The first reptile thermostat to discuss is the cool control. This particular thermostat works for cooling equipment such as fans. It can work up to 300 watts. Once the inside of the terrarium reaches the set temperature it will turn off the fan. It will turn the fan on again if the temperature fluctuates. It is meant to prevent overheating of your reptile. Cool control thermostats are best for places that are hotter than your reptile might be able to handle. In other words if you use the thermostat cool control in the UK you probably will do so when temperatures in your house are warmer than what your reptile prefers.

The dimming thermostat is much different than the cool control in what it controls. The dimming switch is meant for light bulbs. The benefits from this reptile thermostat will depend on what types of light bulbs you have in the cage. If you are using fluorescent bulbs just to light the cage you might want to dim the light in the evenings, where as if you are using it to control a heating lamp you may need to set it for a specific temperature. This thermostat requires a minimum load of 40 watts, but can work up to 600 watts or 230 volts. This thermostat is most recommended for incandescent light bulbs as opposed to other options.

The day and night thermostat is one you might wish to have if you are away for long periods of time and keep your reptile in a closed room without windows. Windows allow your reptile to have natural lighting such as your regular day cycle would have. If you keep them in a room without natural light you need to make a natural cycle with sun and moon. Thermostats like the night/ day allow you to set the lights on a cycle akin to that of your normal monthly calendar. You even have settings for a moonless night to help you cycle the right temperatures for the day.

As you can see the various thermostats on sale will determine the benefits you obtain from the reptile thermostat. You will want to choose the best one based on the reptile you own and their natural life cycle. You should not purchase a thermostat until you understand what your pet requires from you. Once you do you can begin building the proper reptile vivarium environment for your pet reptile.
